Study in Nepal

Bordered by China to the north and India to the south, east and west, Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country in South Asia. After a long period of political turmoil, Nepal is now set to walk the path of progress and development. The education system in Nepal would have to play a very important role in making the country developed in all aspects of life.

In an area of 1,47, 181 sq. k.m., Nepal has a total of 2, 31, 51, 423 people ( 2001). Although this country has lots of potential to develop, at present the education scenario in Nepal is not very bright as compared to it's neighboring countries. The enrollment rate at pre- primary and primary level is only 46%. It is 45.2% in lower secondary level, 44.3% in secondary level, 38.5% in higher secondary level and 27.6% at institutes of higher education. There are 5 stages in the structure of the education system in Nepal if we exclude the pre primary level. Primary education in Nepal starts at the age of 5 and lasts for 5 years. From sixth to the 8th standard, one is at the low secondary level. The secondary (9th & 10th) and higher secondary (11th & 12th) levels are of 2 years duration. After successfully completing the higher secondary level one can move up for higher education in Nepal.

Although the literacy rate in Nepal is abysmally low at 53.7%, the govt.'s commitment to improve the education system in Nepal is evident from the fact that while in 1990 the expenditure on education was mere 1.8% of GDP, it has been increased to 3% in 2003. However lots more need to be done in order to improve access to education to all sections of Nepalese society.
