Accommodation

Top

There are various options available for living in UK. Most universities have rooms in their halls of residence where international students can rent a room. But usually if you accept a room in a university, you would be required to sign a binding arrangement to remain in hall for the full academic year. This policy varies with each university.

Alternately, you could also take private accommodation. This could be either with a British family or sharing a flat with other students. Usually universities have an accommodation office, which can help you with this.

Health Care

Top

Britain has a subsidized health service which provides free health care and treatment for people who are resident in Britain. Students who are enrolled on a programme which will last for more than six months are also entitled to NHS treatment. If a doctor prescribes any medicines these are subsidized but there will be a charge made for each prescription – currently 5.75 UK Pounds per item. Dental treatment is subsidized by NHS but everyone has to pay something towards the cost of their treatment.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

There is almost no financial aid for an MBA in the UK. Some universities may give students with good or exceptional backgrounds, a part tuition fee waiver.

In our opinion, there are not very many scholarship options available for an MBA in the UK. Almost all students who go for an MBA in UK fund the related expenses on their own.

DFID Shared Scholarship Scheme
Part-Time Work While Studying

U.K. is one of the few countries that allows international students to work even outside the campus. Students can work upto 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during vaccations.

Please note that MBA is a very intensive program and you would have lot of assignments and projects to do at any time. It is not easy to take out time to do any extra work during the semester.

Contrary to popular belief, students are able to obtain part-time employment quite easily in bigger cities like London and Birmingham. Students are entitled to work full time during the holidays. There is no permission required for most international students to take part-time and vacation work. Students can take up placements or internship placements, which are part of a ‘sandwich course’.

Usually, most jobs are minimum wage jobs like work in fast food joints and department stores. The higher paid jobs involve working in call centres. You should also explore opportunities available in your university.

Approximate part-time earnings: 4 - 5 Pound Sterling per hour.

You should not plan on earning substantial money from a part-time job to help pay for your studies.

It is important to find a good internship opportunity during your program. Not only do you get paid well if you work with a good organisation but also, it increases your employability on completion of the MBA program.

For further details about internships and part-time work opportunities, contact the foreign student adviser at the university, after you are enrolled.

Post-MBA Jobs & Employment

Any non-EEA national seeking entry or permission to remain in the United Kingdom for the purpose of employment will normally require a work permit. This means you need to find an employer who will sponsor your work permit.

According to the new rules, students who do their MBA in UK are allowed to work in UK for a period of two years.

It is not easy to get jobs in UK after an MBA program, if you are not from a top school. A job is even more difficult for students who do not have any work experience prior to their MBA.

If you are an international student, you should be in top 10% of your class in performance to improve your chances of getting a job.

A number of business schools have a career office that guides students and help them in finding potential employers.

A number of students consider UK MBA program as an entry to Europe. However, this is not practical. It is as tough to get a work permit in any European country after a MBA in UK, as it would have been with a MBA from any other country.

MBA Tuition Fee, Living Cost and Expenses

MBA in UK has lots of financial benefits:

* Most universities in UK offer a One-year MBA
* Access to National Health Centre; which is free for students registered on courses of six months or longer
* Free school education for registered dependent children

There are many small and private colleges, especially around London that offer low cost MBA programmes to international students. Many of these colleges have university affiliated MBA degree programme. These colleges offer a low-cost alternative to international students.

Please note that these colleges do not have university like campuses and do not offer the same quality of infrastructure, facilities and faculty as the bigger universities.

These are the average living expenses. Many international students manage to live in as less as 4000 pounds a year. Most students prefer off-campus accommodation which they share with other international students, thus saving housing costs to a big extent.

Eligibility

Bachelor Degree:

Most UK universities accept the three-year graduation system for entry into the MBA programme. So, if you have a three-year bachelor degree like Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or Bachelor of Science (BSc), this is acceptable as it is considered equivalent to a British Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

However, some universities may require an Honours degree. This is usually equivalent to B.Com. (H), B.Sc. (H) or afour year degree course like B.E.

For most good Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

There are some universities that accept students for the MBA without a bachelor degree if they have considerable work experience and significant professional achievements.

Work Experience:

Most UK universities require a minimum of two to three years of work experience. This is essential.

AMBA Accredited MBA Programs:
All AMBA accredited MBA programmes require a minimum of three years of full-time work experience.

No Work Experience:
There are around five to six UK universities that accept students who have no experience for direct entry into the MBA programme.

There are many colleges in UK that offer University affiliated MBA programs. They are much cheaper than University MBA Programs. However, they have very small campuses and very limited resources and faculty. It may be a good idea to research these institutes well before you apply to ensure that you do not end up applying to schools that are not recognized.

GMAT:

GMAT is accepted and recommended by many universities. However, most UK universities are flexible about this criterion and this is not a mandatory requirement for most UK business schools. So, unless, you aiming for schools like London Business School or Manchester Business School, you need not worry about the GMAT.

TOEFL/IELTS:

You need to take either the TOEFL or IELTS for admission to an MBA program in U.K. This is required for almost all universities. This mandatory for most schools even if you have studied in English medium throughout.

Some schools waive this criteria after a personal interview.

International Student Issues

This section discusses the various issues faced by international students applying to the U.K. for education. We discuss here eligibility criteria for UK colleges, accommodation, health insurance and rules for taking up employment while studying.
Undergraduate (Bachelor Level)

British students undergo thirteen years of pre-university education as compared to twelve years in India. Outstanding marks from one of the two Central Boards (CBSE or ICSE) or their equivalent, or the first year of an Indian degree programme are therefore usually required for direct entry into an undergraduate programme in UK.

For those who do not, as yet, have these qualifications, there is a range of access or foundation courses available. Foundation courses range from four months to a year.

Applicants must satisfy both general and course requirements for admissions :

General Requirements
A specified number of subject passes at both GCE "A" Levels and GCSE at grade C minimum is required for admissions in UK educational system. An equivalent Indian qualification such as a good score in the CBSE and ICSE etc.

Course Requirements
Course requirement details can be obtained from prospectuses of institutions which are available at the Education Counselling Service located in the British Council offices or Libraries.

Important

For Entry into Oxford, Cambridge and London University, ‘A’ level results are required. This in Indian context would mean one year in a college after 12 years of education.

Post Graduate (Master's & Doctorate level)

Most UK universities accept the Indian graduation system of three years for entry into most postgraduate courses. An Indian bachelor degree like B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. is equivalent to a British Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to British Bachelor (Honours) Degree, which requires 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year after graduation or a four year degree course like B.E., B.Tech or other such courses.

For most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

For more details on British Degrees and their Indian equivalent, check out the table below:

British Degree

Indian Equivalent Degree

British Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree
A three-year Indian Graduation Degree like B.A. or B.Sc. and other such courses.

British Bachelor (Honours) Degree
A four-year Indian graduation course like B.E. or B.Tech. or other such courses.
OR
A post graduate degree, from Indian university, like M.A., M.Sc. or other such courses.

British Master’s Degree
A post graduate degree like M.Tech. or M.E. from I.I.T. or I.I.Sc. and other such colleges

UK Education System

British Education has long attracted and welcomed high caliber students of different nationalities and backgrounds, and today builds on hundreds of years of experience in providing quality education to international students. To ensure that the quality is maintained, Britain has implemented unrivalled quality assurance and academic audit systems. The university departments are obliged to meet stringent standards by professional bodies. Standards are high not just in teaching but in other facilities as well : Libraries, computers, research equipment and living accommodation.

British higher and further education provides value for money by offering shorter, more intensive courses than are available in many other countries, thereby reducing living expenses and time spent away from home. Closely supervised study in an intellectually and culturally stimulating environment, together with an emphasis on student welfare and close contact between staff and students also ensures that individual students get maximum support and, as a result, pass rates are high and the drop-out rate for international students is very low.

Britain has long been a popular destination for Indian students. With more than 150 institutes of higher education to choose from, all equipped with extensive facilities, Britain is able to offer a broad spectrum of subjects from the highly academic to the purely practical in anything from architecture to zoology.

For more details of the costs of education and living in UK and comparisons of costs of education in UK with other countries, check out the Expenses & Fees for International Students section.

Details about various Qualifications offered by UK Colleges and Universities:

1.

First Degree Courses in Arts and Sciences (Bachelor's degree) are normally of three or four years' duration and are largely taught courses, sometimes including the preparation of a short written thesis.
2.

Sandwich Courses are where the coursework is accompanied by practical work. A student could either complete 2 years of college, then a year of commercial training before returning for a final year in college. Or, he/she could do a 4-year course with 3-6 months’ training interspersed each year. The main advantage is that the student gets real experience while in the learning mode. Most universities offer this type of education.
3.

Higher National Diploma (HND) is awarded by Vocational and Technical Educational Councils. They offer a 2-year course in a vocational subject like scientific and technical business subjects. Great emphasis is placed on work experience. It is often seen as the first step towards a degree course as the credits can be transferred.
4.

Vocational Courses offer an opportunity to enter the university system slowly. Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC), General Vocational Qualifications (GNVQ), General Scottish Vocational Qualifications (GSVQ) offer recognized courses in a range of disciplines. Most students opt to take 1-2 years of, for example, BTEC courses before being transferred to a degree programme. BTEC national certificates/diplomas are usually accepted as an alternative to A-Levels.
5.

Postgraduate study may take the form of an independent piece of research under supervision or a taught course, and leads to a variety of degrees and awards. The taught courses normally last for one or sometimes two years. Completion of a doctorate normally takes a minimum of three years. Many post-experience courses are also available, either leading to a qualification or providing a refresher course for graduates wishing to update or extend their knowledge. Occasional students are admitted by some institutions in limited numbers. They attend courses or undertake research, possibly for a period of one or two years. These courses do not lead to any formal qualification or 'credit' although certificate of satisfactory attendance may be given.

UK Student Visa

Visa applications have to be made on IM2A forms, which are available free of cost at the British Embassies. This form has to be filled up by the student and submitted to the embassy, along with the Visa application fee and the required documents as mentioned below.

Immigration Rules for Students

*

You must intend to study at a publicly funded university or college, a
bonafide private institution or a fee-paying independent school.
*

You must be able to and intend to follow a full time degree course, or a weekday, full time course at a single institution involving at least 15 hours of organized, daytime study per week.
*

You must be able to pay for your course and the living expenses of your husband or wife and children (if they are with you) without working in UK or claiming public funds.
*

You must not intend to work in UK unless you are accepted for a
course lasting longer than six months, when you may work part-time or
during vacations.
*

You must intend to leave UK at the end of your studies.

Documents Required For a Student Visa

* A letter of acceptance on the course

This will be a letter from your institution confirming that a place has been offered to you and that the course is full-time as defined by the immigration law. The letter should state how long the course will last. Where your course is more advanced and specialized, the letter should also state what level of English is needed for the course (giving minimum test marks, if appropriate) and confirm that you satisfy this requirement.

* Evidence that you can pay the course fees and support yourself and your family, if applicable

Depending on your circumstances, this could include evidence of government sponsorship, a letter from a sponsor in UK confirming they can support you, together with evidence that they can do this, and/or your own bank statements. You should also provide a letter from your place of study stating the full cost of the course, what arrangements are acceptable for payment and whether you have already paid fees or a deposit.

Accommodation
Although the immigration rules do not require unaccompanied students to show that accommodation has been arranged, your place of study may have given you information about its availability, and you should bring this to the attention of the ECO. If your family is coming with you to the UK, you will need to show that there will adequate accommodation for them. If your place of study cannot confirm that family accommodation will be available, you may have to consider travelling to the UK alone and making arrangements for your family to join you when you have found somewhere to live.

The Interview

Interview is a part of your visa application process.

The interview is to give you the opportunity to clarify for the ECO certain parts of your application. The ECO will be aiming to satisfy him or herself that your study plans are genuine and workable.

The interview is a normal part of the process, but you may feel quite nervous before it and find it an uncomfortable experience. ECO’s are trained professionals who will try to make the process as painless as possible, but the questions are necessarily very direct and personal.

You should prepare for such an interview carefully. In particular:

*

Be familiar with all your study plans; why you chose the particular institution and course; how the course will help your future career;
*

Be clear about the cost of living and the course and your finances: do you have enough money to complete the course? Can you prove it?
*

Be as clear as you can about your likely future career in your country: what are you going to do on your return

Schools

Australian schools. Great places to grow up

Australian schools encourage students to develop communication skills, self discipline, problem solving abilities and respect for themselves, others and society. All schools take their responsibilities to students very seriously. Pupils are provided with support, supervision and regular encouragement.

Australian schools are places of personal, intellectual, and emotional growth. Teachers give students regular feedback about their studies and in-class behaviour. Parents have open access to information regarding their child’s progress and well-being.

Schooling in Australia starts with a kindergarten or preparatory year followed by 12 years of primary and secondary school. Australia offers government and non-government schools. Some schools are co-educational, teaching boys and girls; others teach girls only or boys only.

Subjects

Australia has a national curriculum framework to ensure high academic standards across the country. All schools provide subjects in the eight key learning areas: English, mathematics, studies of the society and the environment, science, arts, Languages Other Than English, technology, and personal development, health and physical education. Schools have English language programs for international students to support their studies.

These learning areas are complemented by a social justice theme of tolerance towards other cultures. All school students are taught the value of cultural and linguistic diversity. They’re also encouraged to actively contribute to and benefit from diversity, and to do this in the Australian community and abroad.

Secondary school students can choose specialised subjects. Although subjects vary from school to school, they might include: law, psychology, computing, graphic design, aviation, drama and many others. Of course, all subjects are taught by qualified teachers.

Secondary schools and kindergartens undergo rigorous quality checks to ensure teachers, teaching materials, curricula and facilities are of the highest standard.

Entry requirements

To be accepted to study on a student visa in Australia you will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of English language proficiency, and meet minimum academic requirements.

English language skills

English language skills are a requirement for receiving an Australian student visa. IELETS is the only test accepted by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship () for visa purposes.

Institutions set their own English language requirements for course entry, and the score needed for your course may be different to the score needed to secure your visa. You should check entry requirements with your institution.

Academic requirements

Undergraduate – To gain entry into an Australian undergraduate course you will need to have an Australia Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. Some undergraduate courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects.

Postgraduate – As well as the satisfactory completion of at least one degree at undergraduate level, your institution may take research ability or relevant work experience into consideration.

Vocational education and training – Generally there are no other entrance exams for VET institutions. However some courses may have specific pre-requisite subjects or work experience requirements.

Schools – Entry requirements can vary between schools in Australia, depending on the state or territory you will be studying in. Academic performance and ability is considered during the selection process.

What if you do not meet the entry requirements?

If your English language proficiency score is not high enough, you can enrol in an English language course to prepare you for further study. All Australian universities have English language centres on campus, or have links with English language colleges.

If you don’t meet academic requirements, there are a few options to prepare you for further study. Depending on your previous studies and the final qualification you want to study, you can enrol in secondary school or Foundation Studies.

Minister for Education Julia Gillard and India’s Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal today signed a Joint Ministerial Statement to build on the cooperative ties between the two nations in the education sector.

The Joint Ministerial Statement confirms Australia and India’s commitment to expand the current education exchange program to achieve greater cooperation between the two countries’ schools, higher education, vocational education and training sectors.

The aim of the Ministerial Statement is to strengthen what is already a solid partnership with the Indian Government and open up more avenues to share expertise in the education arena.

Today’s meeting was the result of a commitment made in New Delhi last August to start an annual dialogue between the two Ministers.

Leading education providers and businesses both in Australia and India will also participate in the discussions, providing an opportunity for all levels of the industry to consider ideas and share expertise.

The Ministers also agreed to investigate the establishment of an India–Australia Education Council to improve collaboration on education-related issues.

The Council would consist of academics, policy-makers and industry representatives and will be tasked to explore new partnership opportunities in key fields such as skills demand and education resources.

Ms Gillard took today’s meeting as an opportunity to officially congratulate Minister Sibal and his Government on their Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act 2009 which came into affect in India on April 1.

The Act makes education a fundamental right for all Indian children between the ages of six and 14.

One of the key challenges Minister Sibal and his Government now face is the recruitment of up to 800 000 new teachers to fulfil the aims of the act.

The Australian Government today confirmed our commitment to help provide assistance to Indian institutions with teacher training initiatives. Australian providers are also looking forward to the opportunity for increase involvement once the Indian Government had passed their Foreign Education Institutional Bill.

Building on the 135 institutional partnerships already in place between the two countries, there was agreement today to initiate a Joint Faculty Development program. This will allow for regular exchanges in mutual areas of teaching, research and curriculum development.

Australian representatives from the VET industry are also working with their Indian counterparts on the establishment of an Australia/India Bureau designed to assist with the development of the Indian VET system.
